Why choose QRdx over QR Code Monkey?
The areas where QRdx is the stronger pick. The guide below also covers where QR Code Monkey is the better choice.
Your full design in PDF too
QR Code Monkey applies logo and design settings to PNG and SVG only; its PDF and EPS downloads are plain codes. QRdx exports PNG, JPG, SVG and PDF with the same patterns, colors, logo and frame, plus vector EPS.
No ads in the editor
QRdx has no ads on the site or on your codes. QR Code Monkey is free but ad-supported, with promotions for its paid sister product next to the generator.
An embeddable React library
Install the qrdx npm package and render the same styled codes inside your own app with TypeScript types. QR Code Monkey is a web tool only.
Open source and self-hostable
QRdx is AGPL-3.0 licensed on GitHub. Read the code, run your own instance, or contribute. QR Code Monkey is closed source.
QRdx or QR Code Monkey: which should you use?
QR Code Monkey and QRdx solve the same core job: make a good-looking static QR code for free, with no account. Both encode your content directly in the code, so the codes never expire and have no scan limits. QRdx also makes dynamic codes and hosted pages for people who sign up; the other differences are in the details.
Who each tool is for
QR Code Monkey suits anyone who needs a branded code quickly from a simple web form. It supports linear and radial gradients, custom body and eye shapes, logo uploads up to 2 MB, and explicitly allows commercial use.
QRdx suits the same people, plus teams that want PDF output with their design intact, an ad-free editor, editable codes with scan analytics, or a way to generate the same styled codes inside their own product through the qrdx React package.
Where QR Code Monkey is the better choice
- Your team already uses it and you only need PNG or SVG.
- You want its built-in logo gallery of common brand icons.
Key differences
- Export: QR Code Monkey applies designs and logos to PNG and SVG only; its PDF and EPS files are classic black-and-white codes. QRdx keeps your full design in PNG, JPG, SVG and PDF, and also exports vector EPS.
- Shapes: QRdx offers 9 body patterns, 9 eye (corner frame) shapes and 11 eye-dot shapes, which can be mixed freely. QR Code Monkey offers body, eye frame and eye ball shape choices too.
- Ads: QR Code Monkey is ad-supported. QRdx shows no ads.
- Editable codes: QR Code Monkey makes static codes and points you to a separate paid product for dynamic ones. QRdx's Free plan includes 10 dynamic codes with scan analytics, and Pro (48/yr) makes them unlimited.
- Code: QRdx is open source (AGPL-3.0) and ships an npm package; QR Code Monkey does not.
Switching from QR Code Monkey
- Open the QRdx playground and enter the same URL or content.
- Recreate your colors, gradient, shapes and logo. Save the result as a theme with a free account so you can reuse it.
- Export SVG for print or PNG for screens, and test the code with two or three phone cameras before printing.
Codes you already printed from QR Code Monkey keep working, because static codes do not depend on either service.
