Why choose QRdx over Canva?
The areas where QRdx is the stronger pick. The guide below also covers where Canva is the better choice.
Free logos and patterns on static codes
Canva's static QR codes let you change foreground color, background color and margin. QRdx static codes get 9 body patterns, 9 eye shapes, 11 eye-dot shapes, gradients, a logo and frames for free.
Built only for QR codes
Canva is a design platform where QR codes are one element. QRdx focuses on the code itself, with a contrast checker in the editor and a one-click export of your design as React code.
Embeddable React component
Install the qrdx npm package and render the same styled codes in your own product. Canva's QR codes live inside Canva designs.
Open source
QRdx is AGPL-3.0 licensed and self-hostable. Canva is a closed-source platform.
QRdx or Canva: which should you use?
Canva and QRdx are not really rivals. Canva is a full design platform where a QR code is one element you drop onto a flyer, menu or slide. QRdx is a dedicated QR code generator: it goes deeper on the code itself and gives developers a library to render it.
Who each tool is for
Canva fits people who are already designing the poster or menu in Canva and want the code placed in the same file. Canva has two QR tools. Static QR codes encode a fixed link with no scan tracking, and you can adjust foreground color, background color and margin. Dynamic QR codes let you change the link later and see scan insights, with custom logos and insights tied to paid plans (Canva's help center lists Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit).
QRdx fits anyone who wants a distinctive code for free, with a logo, custom patterns and vector export; anyone who wants editable, tracked codes without a design subscription (the Free plan includes 10 dynamic codes); and developers who want to generate codes in their own app.
Where Canva is the better choice
- You want the QR code placed directly inside a larger design you are editing in Canva.
- You need editable links and scan insights and already pay for a Canva plan that includes them.
- Your team works entirely inside Canva and does not want another tool.
Key differences
- Styling: QRdx's free tier has 9 body patterns, 9 eye shapes, 11 eye-dot shapes, linear and radial gradients, logos and six templates. Canva's static codes are limited to colors and margin.
- Editable codes: Canva offers dynamic codes natively, with logos and insights depending on your plan. QRdx's Free plan includes 10 dynamic codes with logos and scan analytics, and Pro (48/yr) makes them unlimited.
- Export: QRdx downloads PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF and EPS of the code itself, ready to place in any design tool, including Canva.
- Developers: QRdx is an npm package with React components, so the same design can be rendered in your own app. Canva's QR codes are created inside Canva.
Using QRdx with Canva
You do not have to choose. Design the code in the QRdx playground, export it as SVG or a high-resolution PNG, and upload it into your Canva design. Keep a quiet zone (empty margin) around the code, and test the final printed piece on a few phones.
